This is obviously a huge safety hazard because the cracks “can puncture the tires, causing air leaks and tire blowouts.”
According to the lawsuit, the rims are being made with a cheaper cast material instead of forged, which is causing the cracks. GM also allegedly used less material than necessary to save unsprung weight. As a result, the the rims are too weak under normal conditions. To make matters worse, the lawsuit claims that Chevrolet has been denying claims made by owners about the wheel cracks and refusing to cover repair costs, despite the cars being covered by a three-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.
